WAFU B U17 BOYS: Black Starlets Ease Past Nigeria to Book U17 AFCON Ticket

The Black Starlets sealed qualification to the 2026 U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a commanding 2-0 victory over arch-rivals Nigeria in the semifinal of the WAFU Zone B U17 Championship. The win marks Ghana’s return to the continental stage for the first time since 2019.

The Starlets started the game with intent and were rewarded with two quick goals in the first half. Michael Awuli broke the deadlock with a fine strike before Robinho Yao Gavi doubled the lead to put Ghana firmly in control.

Their relentless pressing and composure on the ball frustrated the Nigerians, who struggled to break down Ghana’s solid defensive setup.

It was a performance that underlined the team’s resurgence under head coach Dr. Prosper Narteh Ogum. Following their 3-1 victory over Niger in the final group game, the Black Starlets showed remarkable discipline, recording their first clean sheet of the tournament at the most crucial stage.

The victory not only hands Ghana a ticket to the U17 AFCON but also reignites hopes of reclaiming continental glory after years of absence from the competition. The players’ determination and tactical discipline stood out as they managed the game to perfection against their long-standing rivals.

With qualification secured, attention now shifts to the grand finale where Ghana will face hosts Côte d’Ivoire. The match promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams already assured of AFCON participation but eager to lift the WAFU B trophy.
