- Jefferson-Wooden Runs 21.47 to Complete Sprint Double, Becomes Third-Fastest Woman Ever
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden produced one of the fastest performances in women’s sprint history at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest, clocking 21.47 seconds to win the 200 metres and complete a commanding sprint double.
The American’s performance moved her to third on the all-time list of women’s 200m performers, behind only Florence Griffith-Joyner’s long-standing world record of 21.34 and Shericka Jackson’s 21.41. World Athletics confirmed the 21.47 as Jefferson-Wooden’s personal best and the fastest mark of her career.
The victory came less than 24 hours after Jefferson-Wooden won the 100m title in 10.62 seconds, giving her both short-sprint crowns at the three-day championship and reinforcing her status as one of the dominant figures in global sprinting.
Her 100m performance was itself among the fastest ever recorded, with Jefferson-Wooden beating Olympic champion Julien Alfred, who finished second in 10.74, and Sha’Carri Richardson, who took third in 10.76.
Olympic champion Gabby Thomas had looked particularly strong earlier in the evening, winning their semifinal in 21.88 while Jefferson-Wooden finished second in 22.15. But when the pair returned for the final, Jefferson-Wooden produced a markedly different race.
She powered through the bend and maintained her speed down the home straight to stop the clock at 21.47, well clear of Thomas, who finished second in 21.77.
Kayla White completed an American sweep of the podium in 21.93, while Britain’s Amy Hunt finished fourth in 22.10 and Jamaica’s Ashanti Moore followed in 22.34.
The scale of Jefferson-Wooden’s improvement was particularly striking.
Before the championship, her fastest 200m time was 21.69, according to World Athletics’ pre-event assessment. The 21.47 therefore represented a significant personal breakthrough and moved her into a part of the record books occupied by only two women.
The historical comparison is significant because Griffith-Joyner’s 21.34 world record has stood since the Seoul Olympics in 1988, while Jackson’s 21.41, set at the 2023 World Championships in the same Budapest stadium, had established the Jamaican as the nearest challenger to that mark in the modern era.
Jefferson-Wooden’s performance now places her immediately behind them on the all-time performers list and ahead of some of the most decorated sprinters in the history of the event.
The sprint double also delivered a substantial financial reward.
World Athletics structured the Ultimate Championship with record prize money for athletics, offering US$150,000 to the winner of each individual event. Jefferson-Wooden’s victories in both the 100m and 200m therefore earned her US$300,000. Reuters reported that fellow American Kenny Bednarek collected the same amount after also completing a 100m-200m double in Budapest.
Bednarek won the men’s 200m in 19.52 after taking the 100m crown a day earlier, giving the United States a clean sweep of the sprint doubles at the inaugural championship.
The new competition was created by World Athletics as a compact, season-ending championship designed to bring leading Olympic champions, world champions and top-ranked athletes together in direct head-to-head competition.
Held from September 11 to 13 at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre, the event combined significant prize money with a shortened schedule intended to produce high-profile championship races over three days.
For Jefferson-Wooden, however, the format quickly became secondary to the significance of her performance.
She arrived in Budapest already ranked No.1 in the women’s 100m and among the leading 200m runners in the world. She left with two Ultimate Championship titles, one of the fastest 100m performances of the season and a 200m time that fundamentally changed her standing in sprint history.
The 21.47 also strengthened the case that Jefferson-Wooden is no longer simply a 100m specialist capable of competing over the longer sprint.
Her ability to beat Thomas, one of the world’s established 200m specialists, after losing to her in the semifinal showed how effectively she was able to adjust between rounds and deliver her best race when the title was at stake.
The immediate achievement is the sprint double and US$300,000 in prize money. The more enduring significance is the time.
At 21.47, Jefferson-Wooden has moved into territory reached by almost nobody in the history of women’s athletics.
Budapest therefore gave her more than two championship titles. It placed her alongside the fastest women the sport has ever seen and established a new benchmark for what could yet come from the 25-year-old American.
