GFA and CAF Launch ‘Safe Stadium Initiative’ to Enhance Security at Matches
In a proactive response to recent safety concerns in Ghanaian football, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) have announced a comprehensive training program for security officers as part of the newly established “Safe Stadium Initiative.” This initiative aims to bolster safety measures at stadiums across the country.
The decision follows a tragic incident that occurred two weeks ago in Nsoatre, where a fan was fatally stabbed during a Ghana Premier League match between Nsoatreman and Asante Kotoko. In light of this unfortunate event, the GFA’s Safety and Security Committee conducted a thorough investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Following the committee’s recommendations, the GFA has outlined enhanced safety protocols. Each club in the league will be required to appoint a Club Safety and Security Officer (CSSO), responsible for overseeing safety measures on matchdays. Clubs that fail to appoint a CSSO and submit their details for training will be prohibited from hosting matches in their home venues.
Additionally, the Ghana Police Service will designate a Regional Sports Security Officer (RSSO) for each region, along with a Matchday Security Coordinator (MSC) who will oversee safety and security at matches.
The GFA, in collaboration with CAF, will facilitate training sessions for the RSSOs, MSCs, and CSSOs under the Safe Stadium Initiative. This initiative is not only focused on the Ghana Premier League but will extend to all levels of football within the country.
