Jumia Technologies AG is expanding its footprint in Egypt via food online delivery, where there is a gap in the market following the exit of Uber Eats, Bloomberg reported.
Food makes up 20% of overall transactions on the platform and food delivery “is increasingly important to us”, Sacha Poignonnec, co-CEO of Jumia, commented.
Added that the company will expand its services in Egypt, being a promising market in the region.
Expanding in the Egyptian market means offering some form of food delivery in all 11 of its markets except Saudi Arabia, where Naspers-owned Mr D Food and Uber Eats dominate.
Demand for delivered meals and groceries has exploded worldwide in 2020 as restrictions to contain the coronavirus kept people indoors.
Expanding into food fits with Jumia’s strategy of bringing e-commerce to countries where global giants such as Amazon.com and Alibaba have yet to make major inroads.
