Ken Ofori-Atta Undergoes Successful Prostate Cancer Surgery at Mayo Clinic
Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has undergone a successful major surgery to treat prostate cancer at the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA.
The robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy was carried out on Friday, June 13, 2025, and lasted over four hours. In a statement confirming the procedure, his wife, Professor Angela Ofori-Atta, noted that surgeons were pleased with the outcome and have since placed the former minister on a structured post-operative care regime.
“This has been very difficult,” Prof. Ofori-Atta remarked in an emotional note. “Kenneth has always been resilient. But this has been very difficult; with the OSP choosing the period just before his surgery to declare a red alert on him.”
Her comments referenced the decision by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) to issue a red alert against Mr. Ofori-Atta in the days leading up to the surgery — a move that has been criticised by supporters as ill-timed and lacking in sensitivity given his medical condition.
Despite the legal controversy, Prof. Ofori-Atta said the former minister remains in high spirits and is focused on making a full recovery.
“Kenneth is bearing up well and focused on doing whatever he can to be restored to good health,” she added.
The Ofori-Atta family also extended their gratitude to the Ghanaian public and the international community for the outpouring of support, prayers and goodwill messages received during this period.
Mr. Ofori-Atta served as Ghana’s Minister for Finance from 2017 to 2023. A founding member of Databank and a key architect of the Akufo-Addo administration’s economic agenda, he played a central role in Ghana’s fiscal policy, public finance reforms and negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). His tenure, however, was also marked by controversy, particularly during periods of economic downturn and debt restructuring.
