New Black Queens Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren Confident in Ghana’s Football Talent
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has officially welcomed Kim Lars Bjorkegren as the new head coach of the Black Queens, Ghana’s senior women’s national football team. The Swedish coach, who has signed a two-year contract, expressed his enthusiasm for the immense talent present in the country, believing it sets the stage for future success.
Bjorkegren steps in to replace Nora Häuptle, who left to take the reins of the Zambian national team following the conclusion of her contract last summer. In his first public address, the 43-year-old emphasized the wealth of potential he sees in Ghanaian football. “I can see so much talent in this country,” he declared. “In the short term, we have the potential to be successful. In the long term, I can assure you that we will achieve success.”
The new coach acknowledged the significant progress made in women’s football in Ghana over recent years. He noted initiatives like the Volta project, aimed at fostering talent and improving the game at the grassroots level, which he plans to build upon.
Bjorkegren’s first test will come on February 21 when the Black Queens face Morocco in a friendly match. This game will serve as crucial preparation for the upcoming 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled to be held in Morocco in July.
The Black Queens find themselves in a challenging Group C, where they will compete against formidable opponents, including South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania. With high hopes from fans and stakeholders, the team aims to make a strong statement on the continental stage.
