Dr. Samuel Sarpong: Life and Legacy of the Former Kumasi Mayor and NDC Vice Chairman

Job 14:1-2 – “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.”

A Life of Service and Dedication: Dr. Samuel Sarpong

Dr. Samuel Sarpong, affectionately known as Sammy Tugar and Castro, was born on 7th November 1957 at Adadientem to Mr. Kwabena Mensah Sarpong (of blessed memory) and Mrs. Agnes Boakye Sarpong. From humble beginnings, he rose to become a distinguished public servant, politician, and community leader whose life was marked by service, courage, and resilience.

Early Life and Education

Dr. Sarpong began his education at Adadientem, later attending Besease R/C, Sefwi Wiawso, and Esease Middle School, where he completed his basic studies. He proceeded to Osei Tutu Secondary School and later trained as a teacher at Wesley College, excelling as both a cross-country runner and a high jumper.

Upon completion, he taught at Juaben Secondary School between 1981 and 1982, where he handled Physical Education and Asante Twi.

Public Service and Professional Life

Dr. Sarpong’s leadership qualities quickly came to light. He was appointed PDC Coordinator for the Ejisu/Juaben District and coordinated the Programme of Action to Mitigate the Social Costs of Adjustment (PAMSCAD).

His pursuit of knowledge took him beyond Ghana. He studied criminology in Cuba and later continued his studies in Bulgaria, equipping himself with specialised expertise that enriched his career.

He served in several national institutions, including the Special Branch (now BNI), the Ashanti Regional Investigation Committee (ASHRIC), which later became the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) and subsequently the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He rose through the ranks to become Acting Director of SFO for the Northern Sector, overseeing Ashanti, Bono Ahafo, Northern, Upper East, and Upper West Regions.

Political Career

In politics, Dr. Sarpong left an indelible mark. He served as:

  • Mayor of Kumasi (2009)

  • Ashanti Regional Minister (2013)

  • Central Regional Minister

  • Director of the State Housing Corporation

  • NDC Parliamentary Candidate for Nyiaeso in 2016

He later obtained an Executive Master’s Degree from GIMPA and rose to become Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His deep commitment to party growth was demonstrated in his instrumental role in building the NDC Party Office at Nyiaeso. As a founding member of the party, he was widely admired for his fairness, treating all people equally regardless of colour, creed, or political affiliation.

Traditional and Family Life

Beyond politics and public service, Dr. Sarpong was a respected traditional leader, enstooled as Nkosohene of Cape Coast. He was married to Mrs. Hannah Sarpong, with whom he was blessed with five children: four boys and one girl.

Sudden Departure

On that tragic day, Dr. Sarpong’s remarkable journey was cut short when he became one of eight gallant individuals who perished in the helicopter crash at Sikaman–Brofoyedu in the Ashanti Region.

Legacy

Dr. Samuel Sarpong’s life was one of selfless leadership, unwavering patriotism, and a deep love for family, community, and country. His legacy will endure, serving as an inspiration to generations to come.
