- Gold Fields Returns to Ghana Football as New Women’s Premier League Headline Sponsor
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced Gold Fields Ghana Limited as the new headline sponsor of the Ghana Women’s Premier League, ushering in what football administrators hope will be another transformative chapter for women’s football in the country.
The partnership comes after the successful conclusion of the league’s four-year sponsorship agreement with Malta Guinness and reinforces Gold Fields’ long-standing commitment to the development of Ghanaian football at both the national and domestic levels.
In a statement, the GFA described the agreement as a major investment in the women’s game, noting that the sponsorship reflects the Association’s determination to build a stronger, more competitive and sustainable Women’s Premier League through strategic partnerships.
The Football Association also expressed gratitude to Gold Fields for placing its confidence in the future of Ghana football and welcomed the mining giant into the Ghana football family.
Details of the sponsorship package, the league’s new identity and implementation plans are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
Although Gold Fields is becoming the headline sponsor of the Women’s Premier League for the first time, the company is no stranger to Ghana football.
Only two months ago, Gold Fields signed a landmark US$5 million, two-year partnership with the Ghana Football Association to support the Black Stars, Black Queens, the Black Challenge (Ghana’s national amputee football team) and the Women’s Premier League. The agreement marked one of the largest corporate investments in Ghana football in recent years.
GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku described that agreement as the renewal of a historic relationship, highlighting Gold Fields’ contribution to Ghana football over two decades ago.
The company’s support dates back to the early 2000s when it became one of the Black Stars’ principal sponsors during a golden era that saw Ghana qualify for its maiden FIFA World Cup in Germany in 2006 before returning to South Africa in 2010. Gold Fields also backed the Black Stars during the 2022 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Beyond the national teams, the mining company has invested heavily in football infrastructure, including the development and modernization of the Tarkwa and Aboso Stadium, while also supporting community football and Ghana Premier League side Medeama SC.
Gold Fields replaces Malta Guinness, whose partnership with the Women’s Premier League officially ended in June after four successful seasons.
During its tenure, Malta Guinness invested millions of cedis into women’s football, providing financial support, branding, marketing campaigns and increased visibility that significantly raised the profile of the competition. The sponsorship also contributed to improved competitiveness among clubs and greater national recognition for women’s football.
Contrary to speculation, Malta Guinness did not withdraw because of disagreements with the GFA or dissatisfaction with the league.
The sponsorship simply reached the end of its agreed term. The GFA publicly thanked the beverage company for its immense contribution, with General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo describing the four-year collaboration as instrumental in growing the women’s game. He also indicated that both parties remained on good terms and that Malta Guinness could continue supporting Ghana football in other capacities despite no longer serving as headline sponsor.
The Women’s Premier League has enjoyed remarkable commercial growth over the past decade.
The competition secured its first title sponsor in FreshPak before Malta Guinness took over with a landmark sponsorship package that transformed the league’s commercial appeal and visibility. Gold Fields now inherits a competition that has gained increased media attention, stronger club structures and growing public interest.
For the GFA, the latest partnership represents more than a change of sponsor. It is another step in its broader strategy to strengthen women’s football by attracting long-term corporate investment and creating better opportunities for players, clubs and officials.
With Gold Fields already supporting Ghana’s senior national teams and now assuming title sponsorship of the Women’s Premier League, the mining company has further cemented its position as one of the Ghana Football Association’s most significant and enduring partners, continuing a relationship that has spanned some of the country’s most memorable moments on the international football stage.
