GRA defends contract with Safaritech amid credibility concerns

GRA defends contract with Safaritech amid credibility concerns

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) finds itself embroiled in a staunch defense of its contract with Safaritech Ghana Limited, amidst growing concerns over the latter’s legitimacy and credibility. The controversy came to light when Ningo-Prampram MP Sam George raised the alarm, alleging that Safaritech had been delisted and was operating from a humble barber shop.

In response to mounting pressure, Mr. James Klutse Avedzi, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), issued a stern two-week ultimatum in July, demanding the GRA to provide comprehensive information pertaining to the controversial contract.

In a statement released yesterday, the GRA sought to address the swirling doubts and assuage public apprehensions. The Authority firmly clarified that it had meticulously adhered to all legal requisites while engaging Safaritech Ghana Limited. Emphasizing their commitment to due diligence, particularly when enlisting the services of third-party entities to bolster revenue mobilization, the GRA asserted that it had undertaken prudent measures to meet all necessary requirements when securing Safaritech Ghana Limited’s expertise for conducting forensic audits on Ghana’s telecom companies, alongside other crucial services.

Contrary to the allegations, the GRA firmly attested that Safaritech had commendably executed its duties in close collaboration with GRA officials since the contract’s inception in 2018.

Furthermore, in a bid to dispel any potential confusion, the GRA categorically denied any involvement in contractual arrangements with Safaritech UK, adamantly stating that there were no business dealings with said entity.

The spotlight on Safaritech Ghana Limited intensifies as its previous engagement in January 2023 resulted in the telecom giant MTN Ghana grappling with a contentious tax liability exceeding GH¢8.2 billion, sparking a protracted dispute between the telecommunications behemoth and the GRA over intricate tax quotations.

The GRA’s unwavering defense serves as a critical juncture in the unfolding narrative, as stakeholders eagerly await the outcome of the PAC’s inquiries, seeking further clarity and transparency surrounding the Safaritech saga. Amidst these developments, industry observers and taxpayers alike remain vigilant, watching closely for any decisive resolution that will put to rest the credibility concerns that continue to cast a shadow on the GRA’s contractual affiliations.
