Equities Market Sees 86.5% Decline in Trading Volume for Month of May

Trading activity on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) witnessed a notable slowdown in May 2025, with both volume and value of trades declining significantly compared to the same period last year.

According to the GSE’s Summary of Market Activities for May, the total volume of shares traded stood at 34,534,543, valued at GHS186,648,515.64. This reflects a sharp decline of 86.50% in volume and 52.88% in value year-on-year.

Despite the slump in market turnover, the number of reported transactions rose from 14,053 in April to 20,118 in May, indicating increased participation by market actors, albeit in smaller volumes.

Year-to-date (YTD) data shows a cumulative trading volume of 118,751,545 shares valued at GHS804,703,629.35. This represents a 78.21% drop in volume and a 10.24% decline in value compared to the same period last year, underlining the persistent cautious sentiment among investors.

Meanwhile, the GSE Composite Index posted a modest gain of 0.90% in May to close the month at 6,150.31 points, extending its YTD gain to 25.81%. The Financial Stock Index also climbed 3.37% in the month, with its YTD performance now at 35.13%.
