Joe Jackson Criticizes Judiciary and Police Over Detention of Anti-Galamsey Activists

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dalex Finance, Joe Jackson, has averred that persons as well as institutions that conspired to arrest DemocracyHub protesters in jail should be ashamed to call themselves Ghanaians.

“The flag of Ghana which I have around my neck stands for freedom and justice, those guys (protesters) are not getting freedom and neither are they getting justice.

“And all of us who have conspired to put them there, the prosecution, the police, the judiciary we should all be ashamed that we are Ghanaians,” he remarked.

Mr Jackson made the assertion during the last day of the Youth-Led 3-Day Anti-Galamsey Protests from October 3 to October 5 which ended with a vigil at the Independence Square.

Mr Joe Jackson was at the frontline on the third day of the demonstration to participate in the calls for an end to galamsey, a pressing menace that has destroyed Ghana’s land and water bodies.

Meanwhile, nine out of the 53 arrested activists from the Democracy Hub, including prominent social media figure Ama Governor, have been granted bail after their arrest during protests against illegal mining activities.

Each activist was granted bail at GHS70,000, with two sureties. As part of the conditions, the individuals are required to surrender their Ghana cards to the court registry and report to the police on a weekly basis.

The ruling came following an appeal that successfully overturned a previous circuit court decision denying bail.

The activists are part of a broader group of 53 protesters facing charges ranging from unlawful assembly to assaulting a public officer and conduct likely to breach the peace.

Their arrest followed a demonstration against illegal mining, a contentious issue in Ghana, which reportedly became disorderly.
