Kwasi Appiah Believes Resolving Captaincy Issues Can Propel Black Stars to 2026 World Cup
Former Black Stars coach James Kwasi Appiah has expressed confidence that Ghana’s national football team can secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, provided the ongoing captaincy issues are effectively resolved.
Appiah, who famously led Ghana to the World Cup in Brazil in 2014, emphasized the importance of unity within the squad to achieve success in the upcoming qualifiers.
In an interview with Delali Atiase of Luv FM in Kumasi, Appiah shared his insights on the current state of the team. “I’m really happy that our position at the moment is not that bad,” he remarked. “I am hoping that what I have heard is true, that they’re trying to sort out the captaincy issue. If there are other issues, I hope they resolve them, but you know I’m not with the team, so it’s not everything that I know.”
Appiah stressed that establishing a clear captaincy would foster unity among the players, which is crucial for success. “If they’re able to sort out the captaincy issue, then it’s okay, because the players we have are quality. Without unity, we cannot achieve anything, so I hope and pray that Ghana will qualify for the World Cup.”
In a related development, Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association, confirmed that current coach Otto Addo has appointed Jordan Ayew as the new captain of the Black Stars.
This decision comes as Andre Ayew, Jordan’s older brother, steps down from the role, which he held since being appointed by Appiah ahead of the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
