Kwesi Nyantakyi Cleared as High Court Dismisses Five-Year Legal Battle
An Accra High Court in a significant ruling has officially discharged Kwesi Nyantakyi, the former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), along with his co-accused, after a lengthy five-year legal battle.
The decision was announced by Her Ladyship Justice Marie-Louise Simmonds, marking a pivotal moment for Nyantakyi, who faced serious allegations stemming from a high-profile investigative exposé.
The prosecution’s case faltered as they failed to call a single witness throughout the trial. Although five potential witnesses were presented, none were able to provide testimony, with the final witness demanding to wear a mask during proceedings—an unusual request that complicated the case further.
Without any evidence to substantiate the charges, the court ruled there was no basis to continue the legal proceedings.
A crucial factor in the High Court’s decision was a recent ruling from the Court of Appeal on January 30, 2025, which emphasized the necessity of conducting trials within a reasonable timeframe to ensure fairness.
This precedent provided the High Court with the impetus to discharge the accused, concluding a saga that had cast a long shadow over Ghana’s football community.
The case originated from a bombshell investigation by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, which unveiled corruption and misconduct within the GFA.
The revelations led to Nyantakyi’s resignation in 2018 and sent shockwaves through Ghanaian football, prompting widespread scrutiny of the sport’s governance.
