Kylian Mbappe Wins European Golden Shoe for the First Time in Stellar Season
Kylian Mbappe concluded his first season with Real Madrid in spectacular fashion, winning the coveted European Golden Shoe award.
With an impressive tally of 31 league goals, Mbappe has emerged as the top scorer in European football, amassing a total of 62 points in the weighted scoring system.
In his final league match on Saturday, Mbappe scored twice, surpassing Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres to secure the top spot. This accolade marks an important milestone in his career, making him the third Real Madrid player to win the award, joining legends Hugo Sanchez and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The last French player to earn the Golden Shoe was Thierry Henry, who won it back-to-back in 2004 and 2005 while at Arsenal. Mbappe’s achievement solidifies his status as one of the elite in football, particularly following his standout performance in the 2022 World Cup.
Despite being in Monaco for the Formula One Grand Prix, where he could have been caught by challengers, Mbappe maintained his lead. Mohamed Salah of Liverpool finished third with 29 goals, while Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski scored 27, placing fourth in Europe. Last year’s winner, Harry Kane, rounded out the top five with 26 goals.
Gyokeres led all scorers with 39 goals, but due to the European scoring system, which doubles goals from the top leagues, Mbappe’s total prevailed. The final rankings saw Mbappe leading with 62 points, followed by Gyokeres with 58.5, Salah at 58, Lewandowski with 54, and Kane at 52.
Overall, Mbappe’s remarkable season included 43 goals across all competitions for Real Madrid.
