Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana Congratulates Moses Vilakati on AU Commissioner Appointment, Pledges Support for AU’s Agricultural Transformation Agenda

The Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana, in collaboration with its continental and global partners, has extended its congratulations to Moses Vilakati on his appointment as the African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment.

Commissioner Vilakati’s appointment comes at a critical time for Africa’s agricultural sector, as the continent seeks to bridge its $100 billion annual food import bill despite possessing 65% of the world’s uncultivated arable land.

His track record in agricultural policy, environmental sustainability, and rural development across Southern Africa positions him well to drive structural reforms and unlock Africa’s agribusiness potential.

Policy and Investment Priorities

The Commissioner’s emphasis on mechanization, agro-industrialization, and climate-resilient value chains aligns with the broader objectives of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

His leadership is expected to help harmonize policies across Africa’s 55 nations, addressing longstanding challenges such as funding shortfalls and fragmented regulatory frameworks.

However, his tenure begins amid mounting global economic and geopolitical pressures. The recent withdrawal of USAID agricultural funding has created significant financing gaps, particularly in regions already vulnerable to climate shocks.

In South Sudan and Sudan, funding cuts have stalled food distribution programs, exacerbating food insecurity. Meanwhile, supply chain disruptions from the Russia-Ukraine conflict continue to strain Africa’s access to essential commodities like wheat and fertilizer.

Despite these hurdles, Africa’s agricultural transformation remains a key driver of economic growth, with increased investments in agri-tech, digital finance, and sustainable food systems presenting new opportunities.

Strategic Partnerships and Commitments

The Chamber of Agribusiness Ghana, alongside its regional and global partners, pledges to support Commissioner Vilakati’s agenda by:

  • Expanding digital infrastructure – Scaling up farmer advisory platforms and integrating them into pan-African agri-tech networks.
  • Advocating for trade policy reforms – Strengthening Africa’s position at the WTO to secure fairer trade terms for agricultural exports.
  • Unlocking blended finance – Collaborating with institutions like the African Development Bank (AfDB) to improve access to credit for smallholders and agri-startups.
  • Fostering South-South cooperation – Facilitating knowledge-sharing initiatives with global partners, leveraging successful agricultural models from emerging markets.

As Africa’s population is set to reach 2.5 billion by 2050, the need for strategic leadership in the agricultural sector has never been more urgent.

The Chamber says it remains committed to working with Commissioner Vilakati to ensure Africa achieves food security, strengthens value chains, and drives economic transformation through agriculture.
