La Liga: Atletico Stun Barcelona with Late Sorloth Strike to Claim Lead
Atletico Madrid pulled off a dramatic comeback victory against Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium on Saturday, winning 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Alexander Sorloth. This thrilling encounter saw Atletico snatch the La Liga lead, moving three points clear of Barcelona, having played one less match.
Barcelona, despite dominating possession and controlling the tempo for much of the match, succumbed to their third consecutive home league defeat, their worst run since 1987. This also marked Diego Simeone’s first-ever away victory against Barcelona in La Liga, adding another layer of significance to the result.
The Catalan giants, missing the injured teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, started brightly, suffocating Atletico with their high press. Raphinha had an early header miss and a blocked shot, while Inigo Martinez forced a save from Jan Oblak. Barcelona’s appeals for a penalty when the ball struck Giovanni Simeone’s arm were waved away by the referee.
The breakthrough came in the 30th minute, orchestrated and finished by the brilliant Pedri. The Spanish midfielder surged forward, feeding Gavi, whose attempted turn inadvertently played the ball back to Pedri. The youngster calmly slotted the ball past Oblak to give Barcelona a deserved lead.
Barcelona had golden opportunities to double their advantage early in the second half. Fermin Lopez was denied by Oblak’s outstretched legs, and moments later, Raphinha struck the crossbar after a sublime pass from Pedri.
Against the run of play, Atletico found their equalizer. Marc Casado’s misguided backheel clearance fell kindly to Rodrigo De Paul at the edge of the box. The in-form Argentine midfielder unleashed a powerful low shot into the bottom corner, marking his third goal in four league games.
The final stages were a frantic end-to-end affair. Robert Lewandowski, LaLiga’s top scorer, missed a point-blank chance, though Ferran Torres appeared offside in the build-up. At the other end, Inaki Pena produced a fine save to deny Pablo Barrios, while Oblak thwarted Raphinha after another exquisite Pedri pass. Pedri himself had a late chance, but Oblak proved unbeatable.
Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Atletico delivered the knockout blow. Deep into stoppage time, Nahuel Molina delivered a pinpoint cross, finding the ever-reliable super-sub Alexander Sorloth, who calmly slotted home the winner, sending the Atletico bench into raptures.
This victory ensures Atletico Madrid will be at the summit of La Liga at Christmas. Champions Real Madrid, who face Sevilla on Sunday, have the opportunity to leapfrog Barcelona with a victory, adding further intrigue to the title race.
