La Liga: Madrid Derby Ends in Tense 1-1 Draw Amid Late Controversy

Angel Correa scored a dramatic equalizer in the 96th minute as Atletico Madrid rallied to draw 1-1 with Real Madrid in a thrilling Madrid derby at Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday night.

The first half was tightly contested, with Real Madrid slightly edging possession at 54% and both teams managing two shots on target. Atletico’s Julian Alvarez was thwarted by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, while Jan Oblak made crucial saves against Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham, leaving the teams level at halftime.

Real Madrid broke the deadlock in the 64th minute when Eder Militao scored from a Vinicius Junior cross. Following the goal, a brief delay occurred due to objects thrown onto the field, prompting Atletico manager Diego Simeone to engage with the home fans to restore order.

Once play resumed, Oblak was quickly tested again by a powerful shot from Vinicius. Atletico made tactical changes to regain control and found their equalizer through Correa in the 96th minute. Although the goal was initially disallowed for a suspected handball, replays confirmed no offense, allowing Correa’s close-range effort to stand.

Despite Atletico’s late equalizer and Marcos Llorente’s red card for a late foul, Real Madrid extended their unbeaten La Liga streak to 40 matches, just three shy of Barcelona’s record from the 2017-18 season.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team remains second in the table, three points behind leaders Barcelona, while Atletico sits third, five points off the top after eight matches.
