Lionel Messi wins seventh Ballon d’Or
PSG and Argentine superstar Lionel Andres Messi won his seventh Ballon d’Or award in Paris at the 65th Ballon D’or ceremony awards night.
Arguably the Greatest of All Time, Messi beat off competition from Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho to claim his seventh Ballon D’or in grand style.
Lionel Messi scored 38 goals and provided 14 assists from 47 appearances across all competitions in what was his last season at Barcelona.
The talisman has contributed seven goals in 11 matches for new club PSG across all competitions so far this campaign.
However, many would say that Lionel Messi’s biggest achievement over the course of the year was leading Argentina to the Copa America in the summer.
The former Barcelona superstar added to his legacy by winning his first major trophy with his country after several years pushing for the ultimate.
Lionel Messi also won the Copa del Rey with Barcelona in the 2020/2021 season after beating Athletic Club de Bilbao.
The former Barca captain was handed his award by his good friend and former Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez.
Messi after receiving the award had some classy words of consolation for runner up Lewandowski in his acceptance speech.
“Tell Robert that it is very special to have reached the final with him. Everyone agreed that last year you were the winner,” he said. “It couldn’t be done because of the pandemic, but I think you deserve to have this trophy at home.”
Lionel Messi wins the record seventh Ballon D’or, winning his first three consecutively in 2010, 2011, 2012. He then won it again 2015, 2019 and now 2021.
