List of African Countries With a Nuclear Cooperation Agreement With Russia

In recent years, several African countries have signed nuclear cooperation agreements with Russia, intending to employ nuclear technology for initiatives such as energy generation, medicinal applications, and agricultural developments.

Africa has historically been an arena for global superpowers seeking to expand their economic, political, and military reach.

The continent’s enormous natural resources, strategic position, and emerging markets make it an alluring target for governments looking to establish domination.

Today, the fight for African influence is fiercer than ever, with old and developing nations forming alliances through diplomacy, investment, and security to protect their interests.

Among the benefits global powers are offering to gain traction on the continent are nuclear partnerships.

Very recently, Russia and Uganda disclosed intentions to partner on a nuclear project, that would involve the construction of a nuclear power plant in the East African country.

In July 2024, the Russian-state-owned energy company Rosatom signed a nuclear deal with the Congo Republic.

In March, Algeria’s Ministry of Energy signed a memorandum of cooperation with Rosatom.

These sorts of deals have been very synonymous in Africa over the last few years, underscoring Russia’s push to imprint its influence on Africa’s economic identity.

The growing number of nuclear cooperation agreements between African nations and Russia has numerous ramifications.

For many African countries, nuclear energy provides a stable and permanent solution to chronic power shortages, promoting industrialization and economic progress, which has not been as great as intended with Western partnerships.

With that said below are the African countries with nuclear deals with Russia, as seen in the Grey Zone Report.
