2023 CHAN Qualifiers: Ghana beat Nigeria to qualify for tournament after 8 years of wait

The Black Galaxies of Ghana have qualified for the 2023 Championship of African Nations tournament in Algeria, after recording a 5-4 win against archrivals Nigeria in a penalty-shootout at the Moshood Abiola stadium in Nigeria.

Ghana won the first leg of the tie 2-0 in Cape Coast last week and only needed to avoid defeat to Nigeria in the second leg to progress to the tournament to be staged in Algeria next year.

However, after a goalless 70 minutes, the CHAN Eagles of Nigeria reduced the deficit after scoring in the 76th minute, to make the scoreline 2-1.

It seemed like Ghana were going to hold on to win but the home team scored late in added time to draw parity, taking the game to a penalty-shootout.

The Black Galaxies scored all their penalty kicks while Nigeria missed one to give Ghana a 5-4 win and qualify for the 2023 tournament.

This is the first time Ghana has qualified for the CHAN tournament in eight (8) years, missing out on the last four editions.
