Majority Leader Hassan Ayariga Champions Revitalization of GPL with SuperSport Broadcast Plans

In a bold move to enhance the visibility of Ghanaian football, Majority Leader of Parliament and MP for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has announced plans to engage international broadcaster SuperSport for coverage of the Ghana Premier League. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to position sports as a key component of Ghana’s proposed 24-hour economy.

During a recent Parliamentary session addressing the issue of hooliganism in football, Mahama Ayariga underscored the government’s commitment to revitalizing the sports sector, stating, “As part of the 24-hour economy strategy, sports is going to be a major cornerstone.” He highlighted the efforts of the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, who has initiated discussions with stakeholders to bring this vision to fruition.

Mahama Ayariga revealed that Kofi Adams is actively pursuing negotiations with SuperSport and other media outlets to broadcast local league matches. This move is seen as essential in improving the profile of Ghanaian football and attracting a larger audience.

However, the initiative faces significant challenges, particularly in light of recent incidents of hooliganism that have marred the league. The tragic death of Francis Yaw Frimpong and the assault on referee Esoh Morrison have raised serious concerns about safety and governance within the sport. These incidents prompted a temporary suspension of the league, underscoring the need for substantial reforms to restore confidence in its viability.

“Securing an international partner like SuperSport would require significant reforms and assurances to ensure the league’s safety and integrity,” Mahama Ayariga added, emphasizing the importance of addressing the underlying issues before moving forward.

While the government’s ambition to elevate sports within the economy is commendable, it presents formidable challenges. The responsibility now lies with the Sports Ministry and Minister Kofi Adams to implement concrete steps that will turn this vision into reality, ultimately enhancing the reputation and safety of Ghanaian football.
