Max Verstappen Ends Speculation, Commits to Red Bull for 2026 Season

"I never made an opera. I don’t like opera anyway." — Verstappen dismisses 'soap opera' over Mercedes rumours

  • Max Verstappen Ends Speculation, Commits to Red Bull for 2026 Season

Max Verstappen has officially shut down speculation over a potential move to Mercedes, confirming he will remain with Red Bull Racing for the 2026 Formula 1 season.

In the lead-up to this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix, the four-time world champion addressed swirling rumours, some of which intensified following the recent sacking of Red Bull team boss Christian Horner and reports of Verstappen vacationing near Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

“Some individuals enjoy stirring up controversy and creating drama,” Verstappen stated. “But for me, it’s always been quite clear. I’m already discussing with the team the plans and the things that we want to change for next year. So that means I’m also staying with the team for next year.”

Although Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, widespread reports have suggested that the Dutchman possesses performance-related release clauses, which have prompted discussions about a potential switch to Mercedes—especially as F1’s sweeping regulatory changes are anticipated in 2026. Mercedes’ Wolff had previously confirmed interest, saying he was “in conversations” regarding Verstappen but admitted a post-2026 move seemed more likely.

Verstappen, now 27, has dominated F1 in recent years, claiming four consecutive drivers’ championships. However, Red Bull’s recent dip in performance and internal turmoil following Horner’s exit had cast doubt over his long-term allegiance. Verstappen had remained silent on the matter—until now.

Addressing the media Thursday, Verstappen ridiculed the media frenzy:

“The issue is that people talk excessively throughout the entire season, while the only person who can or should speak is remaining silent. That’s me. And I do that on purpose.”

He even poked fun at the rumours of a clandestine meeting with Wolff while vacationing in Sardinia:

“If my boat is next to Toto’s, then the boat is next to Toto’s. You can have a personal relationship with someone even if you don’t have a working relationship with them.”

The announcement provides much-needed stability for Red Bull following Horner’s abrupt departure after two decades at the helm. Jos Verstappen, Max’s father and a vocal critic of Horner, has since stated he is “fine” with the team boss’ exit, potentially easing internal tensions.

Meanwhile, Mercedes appears to have shifted their focus elsewhere. Wolff has stated he is confident George Russell and rising star Kimi Antonelli will form the Silver Arrows’ 2026 driver lineup.

Verstappen’s confirmation solidifies Red Bull’s foundation heading into the new technical era in 2026, when fresh regulations will overhaul F1’s power unit architecture. With Verstappen staying, Red Bull can now move forward with development plans tailored to their star driver.
