Energy Committee of Parliament to hold crunch meeting with key power sector stakeholders on Saturday

The Energy Committee of Parliament has called for an extensive meeting with key players in the country’s power supply chain slated for Saturday, April 6, 2024, to discuss the ongoing challenges in the power supply sector that have resulted in unexpected power cuts, commonly referred to as “dumsor”.

The meeting will witness the participation of the Independent Power Producers (IPPs), Volta River Authority (VRA), Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Bui Power Authority, Northern Electricity Development Company, Ghana Gas Company Limited, and representatives from the Ministry of Energy.

Mr John Abu Jinapor, the Ranking Member of the Energy Committee, clarified that the primary objective of the meeting is to gain firsthand insights into the issues affecting the country’s power generation mix.

He emphasized that the meeting is not intended to assign blame but rather to collaboratively identify lasting solutions to the power cuts.

Mr Jinapor underscored the authority of the committee, likening it to a High Court, and warned stakeholders against providing false information, as such actions could lead to charges of perjury.

“As a committee vested with the powers akin to those of a High Court, individuals found to be dishonest may face legal consequences,” he quipped.

Mr. Jinapor reaffirmed the committee’s dedication to finding lasting solutions to the power supply challenges that have had a significant impact on businesses and the lives of citizens.
