VAT collections rise by 92.4% yoy bolstered by stringent enforcement measures

Ghana’s Value Added Tax (VAT) collections have witnessed a staggering surge of more than 90% year-on-year in the current year of 2023, eclipsing the figures of 2022. This remarkable upswing, as per data emanating from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), is ascribed to a confluence of factors, notably the implementation of rigorous enforcement operations and the advent of an electronic VAT infrastructure.

In the wake of an enforcement exercise conducted in Accra, the Area Manager for Accra Central and Assistant Commissioner, Joseph Annan, addressing the media expounded on the catalysts behind this unprecedented VAT growth, which stands in stark contrast to the previous year’s performance. He noted that the combination of intensified enforcement operations and the adoption of a technologically advanced electronic VAT system has accounted for the upsurge.

The efficacy of the enforcement efforts, led by Assistant Commissioner Annan, has evidently bolstered VAT collections. This strategic approach encompasses targeted audits, inspections, and stringent measures against tax evasion culprits. Such initiatives ensure a robust compliance landscape and fortify the revenue stream.

The introduction of the electronic VAT framework has also been a pivotal driver of this commendable growth trajectory. This innovative system facilitates real-time monitoring of tax transactions between taxpayers and retail proprietors. The infusion of technology not only expedites the identification of irregularities but also engenders greater accuracy in VAT reporting and collection procedures.

In May 2022, VAT collections hovered around GHS 646 million. Fast forward to May 2023, and the figure has skyrocketed to approximately GHS 1.2 billion, as per a comprehensive Bank of Ghana report on VAT collection within the national economy. This remarkable surge translates to an impressive 92.4% augmentation in VAT collections when juxtaposed with the figures from the prior year.

Buoyed by this laudable achievement, the GRA is poised to expand its operational footprint across various regions of the country. This strategic move is anticipated to amplify revenue accrual for the nation by ensuring enhanced tax compliance and adherence to VAT regulations.
