Madrid Open: Rafael Nadal bids emotional farewell after straight-sets defeat
Former world number one Rafael Nadal’s Madrid Open campaign came to an emotional end with a straight-sets defeat to Czech youngster Jiri Lehecka at the Caja Magica.
Nadal, a five-time champion at the tournament, waved goodbye to the Madrid Open after falling to Lehecka in a 7-5, 6-4 loss.
Speaking after the match, the 37-year-old expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete once again in Madrid, calling the experience “very special, positive, and emotional.”
He thanked everyone who has supported him throughout his career and hinted at a return next year, despite his plans to retire after the 2024 season.
Although Nadal’s defeat marked the end of his Madrid Open journey this year, he was honoured with a video tribute and awarded a commemorative trophy, affirming his status as one of the tournament’s legends.
Reflecting on his performance, Nadal acknowledged Lehecka’s strong play and expressed satisfaction with his own performance despite concerns about his fitness coming into the tournament.
Looking ahead, Nadal will draw confidence from his three victories in Madrid as he prepares to compete in the French Open, where he aims to make his mark for a final time.
The 14-time champion at Roland Garros missed the tournament in 2023 due to injury but is determined to showcase his prowess once again when the French Open begins on May 26.
