President Mahama in Singapore to Court Investment and Deepen Bilateral Ties
President John Dramani Mahama has begun a three-day state visit to Singapore as Accra looks to expand trade and investment links with Southeast Asia’s financial hub and draw lessons from its model of innovation-led growth.
The trip, his first to the city-state since returning to office, will focus on advancing cooperation in education, science and innovation, agribusiness, urban solutions, and the digital economy — areas Ghana has prioritised for structural transformation.
President Mahama is expected to hold bilateral discussions with Singapore’s president, Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and prime minister, Lawrence Wong. He will also deliver the keynote address at the 8th Africa–Singapore Business Forum and headline a Ghana-focused investment forum aimed at attracting capital into the West African economy.
“Ghana and Singapore share a forward-looking outlook anchored in innovation, skills, and enterprise,” President Mahama said on arrival. “This visit will translate our shared values into practical cooperation, bringing Singaporean investment and know-how into Ghana’s priority sectors while opening new pathways for Ghanaian businesses across Southeast Asia.”
The President is accompanied by senior officials, including the Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Trade and Agribusiness Minister Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, and head of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, Simon Madjie.
The visit comes as Ghana seeks to stabilise its economy following a $3bn IMF programme and attract long-term investment into sectors beyond commodities, with policymakers positioning the country as a gateway for Asian businesses seeking a foothold in West Africa.
