Mahama promises rigorous scrutiny of Government contracts above $5 million

Former President John Mahama, in a media engagement on July 7, 2024, asserted that transparency and accountability are crucial in the battle against corruption, unveiling plans to establish an office dedicated to scrutinizing government procurements.

This announcement comes as part of his campaign for the December 2024 general elections.

Mr Mahama pinpointed government procurement as a major conduit for corruption pledging to create an independent value-for-money office to examine all government procurements exceeding a $5 million threshold, should he return to power.

“God willing, as the incoming President and Leader, I assure the people of Ghana that the NDC is fully committed to accountability, and this is why one of our key policies will be to set up an independent value-for-money office to scrutinize all government procurements above $5 million threshold,” he quipped.

This office, he emphasized, would ensure that public finances are managed with strict adherence to national laws, marked by transparency and contemporary value-for-money assessments, always serving the broader citizenry’s interests.

The former president underscored his commitment to a renewed anti-corruption drive, promising stringent oversight of his appointees.

He assured Ghanaians that rigorous measures would be taken to penalize corrupt officials and their accomplices, both within his potential administration and the current NPP government.

This initiative, Mr Mahama argued, would represent a significant step towards restoring public trust and ensuring ethical governance.

“Ghanaians can be assured that drastic steps will be taken to punish corrupt officials and their accomplices in my administration as well as the present NPP administration. No corrupt official in this NPP administration will be spared and we will also take action to repossess what has been unlawfully stolen from the Ghanaian people,” he quipped.
