Mahama Urges Akufo-Addo, State Security Agencies to Address Escalating Lawlessness Nationwide

President-elect John Mahama has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo and Ghana’s security agencies to take immediate and decisive steps to address reported incidents of lawlessness across the country.

His remarks, delivered during a national address from his residence on Tuesday evening, come amid concerns over attacks on state offices and installations, which some fear could undermine Ghana’s democratic stability.

Call for Action

In his address, Mr. Mahama emphasized the critical role of the outgoing administration in maintaining order during the transition period.

“State power remains firmly in the hands of the current administration,” he said, urging the government and security services to act decisively to curb lawlessness.

The President-elect expressed concern over incidents suggesting a power vacuum during the transition.

“Transitions often create the perception of a lapse in authority, leading some to act in their parochial interests rather than the national interest,” he said.

Condemnation of Attacks

Mr. Mahama strongly condemned the attacks on state infrastructure, stating, “I have received reports of attacks on state offices and installations. While the culprits remain unidentified, I condemn these actions in no uncertain terms. Such acts must cease immediately.”

He appealed for calm and urged the youth to resist engaging in criminal activities out of frustration.

“As I stated during my post-declaration speech, I urge the youth not to channel their frustrations into criminal enterprises. Instead, let us focus our energy on rebuilding and resetting our beloved nation,” he said.

A Call for Unity

The President-elect underscored the importance of unity and collective effort during this transitional phase.

“We have fought hard for change, and now is the time to demonstrate our commitment to rebuilding the Ghana we envision through understanding and collaboration,” he noted.

Mr. Mahama’s appeal reflects his commitment to ensuring a peaceful and orderly transition while safeguarding the country’s democratic credentials.

As Ghana navigates this critical period, his message serves as a reminder of the importance of stability, restraint, and collective effort in achieving national progress.
