Manny Pacquiao Aims for Glory in Comeback Fight Against Barrios
Former world champion Manny Pacquiao is set to make a dramatic return to the ring, embracing his underdog status as he prepares to challenge WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios this Saturday at the MGM Grand. After four years away from boxing, the 46-year-old Filipino is eager to turn back the clock and add to his storied legacy.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Pacquiao expressed his excitement, stating, “I’m enjoying training camp as much as I did when I was 26 or 29 years old. The motivation to train hard and the discipline are the same.” He believes that his time away from the sport has reignited his passion for boxing.
Pacquiao retired in 2021 and spent years serving in the Philippine Senate, even making an unsuccessful bid for the presidency in 2022. Yet his record remains remarkable, boasting championships in eight weight divisions—a feat unmatched in boxing history. He also made headlines as the oldest welterweight champion at age 40 in 2019.
Reflecting on his long career, Pacquiao said, “I cannot imagine that I am still fighting here in the Grand Arena after 24 years. It’s a blessing from God, and I’m grateful to still be putting on a show for the fans.” He relishes the role of the underdog, adding, “In many of my fights, I was the underdog, and I surprised them… Manny always brings surprises.”
Pacquiao’s opponent, Mario Barrios, stands at 30 years old with an impressive record of 29 wins, including 18 by knockout, and only two losses. While acknowledging Pacquiao’s legendary status, Barrios remains focused on defending his title. “At the end of the day, he’s just another man in there. He’s another opponent trying to take my title,” Barrios stated confidently.
