Mason Mount delighted to make Man United debut in win over Leeds

Mason Mount has opened up on his debut appearance for Manchester United, with the midfielder playing the first 45 minutes of his new side’s first pre-season friendly of the summer on Wednesday in Oslo.

The summer arrival from Chelsea was named in the starting XI against Leeds United before being withdrawn at the interval, with second-half goals from Noam Emeran and Joe Hugill deciding the contest.

Mount played in a midfield three alongside Hannibal Mejbri and Kobbie Mainoo, and the England international has now reacted to his first outing for the 20-time English champions.

“We’ve been working very hard [in training], so it’s good to now put it into practice and play on the pitch now,” Mount told MUTV after the clash with the Whites. “That first week is mostly focused on getting the legs going again, getting the distance in the legs by running.

“But we’ve definitely been working on a few tactics as well, coming into this game. I’ve definitely got a great understanding of how the manager wants to work and how the boys play.

“Obviously now it’s about using these games to work at it more and putting it into practice when we get on the pitch. It was a good start today, a good win. As I said, it’s important to get the minutes in the legs, but it’s important to win as well and that’s what we want to do this season.

“All of us had a tough week, but it’s great to have that 45 minutes in the tank now.

“I really liked that role today (deeper midfield position). Being able to drop in and get on the ball and start the play from a bit deeper, but also having that freedom to be able to get forward and get in the box.

“When the younger boys came on and played, they were amazing. They were brilliant. It was really exciting for the club to see them come on and do well.”

Mount also commented on the support of the Man United fans, with the club’s new number seven determined to “make them proud”.

“I’ve seen it first hand now,” the midfielder added following the two-goal success over Leeds. “When we turned up last night and when we turned up at the stadium today, the support has been amazing.

“They came out and showed up for us today and it’s amazing to see. This is what we want to play for and we want to make them proud.”

Man United will be bidding to make it back-to-back wins at the start of their pre-season campaign when they take on French giants Lyon next Wednesday.
