President Mahama Reaffirms Commitment to Attracting German Investments Under AfCFTA Framework
President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed Ghana’s strong commitment to creating a conducive environment for increased German private sector investment, particularly within the framework of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which is headquartered in Accra.
Speaking after bilateral talks with visiting German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at the Jubilee House on Monday, November 3, President Mahama said the AfCFTA presents “unparalleled opportunities” for German and other international businesses to access a market of over 1.3 billion people across Africa, with Ghana positioned as the strategic entry point.
“The African Continental Free Trade Area offers unparalleled opportunities for German and other businesses to enter a market of over 1.3 billion people across the continent, with Ghana positioned as the strategic gateway and partner,” President Mahama stated.
Strengthening Bilateral and Economic Ties
The high-level discussions also centred on Germany’s evolving Africa strategy under its Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), which emphasizes sustainability, decent work, gender equality, climate resilience, and peace and security.
President Mahama disclosed that both countries had identified “specific opportunities” for enhanced cooperation in renewable energy, green industrialisation, digital transformation, and skills development — areas he described as critical to Ghana’s future and aligned with global sustainability objectives.
“These sectors are crucial to Ghana’s future, and they align with global sustainability objectives,” he noted.
Labour Mobility and Skills Partnership
President Mahama particularly welcomed the growing collaboration between Ghana’s Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment and leading German firms to strengthen technical and vocational education and training (TVET) for young Ghanaians.
He revealed that both sides had expressed optimism about a forthcoming labour mobility agreement that would facilitate safe, structured, and mutually beneficial employment pathways for skilled Ghanaian professionals in Germany.
“This agreement will enable safe, respectful, and well-structured employment opportunities for young Ghanaian professionals in Germany, while addressing skills shortages in key German sectors,” the President added.
President Steinmeier’s Visit
President Steinmeier, who is on a state visit to Ghana, is scheduled to travel to Kumasi on Tuesday to pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and participate in other official engagements before departing the country later in the evening.
