- 2026 FIFA World Cup: Netherlands Move a Step Closer to Knockout Phase with Empathic Win over Sweden
The Netherlands took a major step toward the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stages after producing a commanding 5-1 victory over Sweden in a crucial Group F encounter at Houston Stadium on Saturday.
A brilliant attacking display from Brian Brobbey and Cody Gakpo proved too much for Sweden to handle, with both players scoring twice as Ronald Koeman’s side collected three vital points to move into a strong position in the race for qualification.
The Dutch made an aggressive start and immediately controlled possession, pinning Sweden deep inside their own half during the opening exchanges.
Their early dominance paid off after just five minutes. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen launched a long ball forward to Brobbey, who used his strength to hold off his marker before releasing the attack. Cody Gakpo then delivered a low cross from the left flank, allowing Brobbey to finish comfortably and hand the Netherlands a deserved lead.
The Oranje continued to dictate the tempo and doubled their advantage in the 17th minute. A deflected ball inside the Swedish penalty area fell kindly for Brobbey, who reacted quickest to fire home from close range and register his second goal of the match.
Despite trailing, Sweden gradually grew into the contest after the hydration break. Strikers Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak both tested Verbruggen as Graham Potter’s men searched for a way back into the game.
The Scandinavians thought they had reduced the deficit just before halftime when Gustaf Lagerbielke headed home from a set-piece. However, celebrations were cut short after a VAR review confirmed the defender was in an offside position.
Any hopes of a Swedish comeback were quickly extinguished after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, the Netherlands extended their lead to 3-0. Crysencio Summerville delivered a dangerous low ball across goal and Gakpo arrived at the far post to tap in with ease.
The Liverpool forward struck again seven minutes later with arguably the goal of the match. After Sweden lost possession during a promising attack, the Dutch launched a swift counter. Gakpo collected the ball on the edge of the area, drove forward and cut onto his right foot before curling a clinical finish beyond the goalkeeper for his second goal of the evening.
Sweden finally found a breakthrough on the hour mark through substitute Anthony Elanga. The winger completed a rapid counterattack, racing into the penalty area before firing a left-footed effort past Verbruggen to make it 4-1.
Elanga’s goal sparked a brief period of Swedish pressure, with Potter’s side creating several opportunities through quick transitions. Verbruggen was called into action on more than one occasion as the Dutch defence came under sustained pressure.
However, the Netherlands had the final say. With one minute remaining, a slick passing move involving Memphis Depay and Summerville carved open the Swedish defence. Summerville finished the move he started, driving toward goal before calmly slotting the ball into the bottom corner to complete the scoring.
The emphatic victory leaves the Netherlands on four points from two Group F matches and firmly on course for a place in the knockout rounds, while Sweden face an uphill battle to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
