Gov’t Seeking Strategic Partner to Relaunch National Airline
Ghana is advancing plans to establish a new national airline, with Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe confirming that the government is in search of a strategic partner to help finance and operate the carrier.
Speaking to staff at the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, Nikpe acknowledged that the country’s economic constraints made it unfeasible for the state to independently fund the initiative. Instead, the government is focused on attracting credible investors to support a long-term, commercially viable airline.
“We are looking for a partnership to establish a national airline. When it comes to partnership, it will take time. We have to know who they are—to partner with you to bring in a national carrier that will fly for a very long time,” the Minister stated.
A shortlist of potential partners is expected to be announced in the coming months as Ghana seeks to revive a national airline more than a decade after the collapse of Ghana Airways in 2004 and the failure of its successor, Ghana International Airlines, in 2010.
Successive governments have explored various proposals to reintroduce a state-backed carrier, but none have materialised.
The latest effort underscores the administration’s renewed push to strengthen Ghana’s aviation sector, which has seen growing competition from regional and international operators.
