Michael Essien Encourages Young Footballers to Stay Humble and Learn
Former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien recently shared important advice for young footballers in an interview with the BBC.
He emphasized the need for humility and the importance of learning from coaches and experienced players.
Essien, a UEFA Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2012, believes that many young athletes often overestimate their knowledge of the game.
“This generation can sometimes be difficult. They think they know the world, but actually, they don’t know anything,” he said. He is eager to help them, stating, “I’m always ready to give them advice and guidance.”
Reflecting on his own path into coaching, Essien admitted he never considered it while playing. However, as he neared retirement, he realized he wanted to share his football knowledge. “I wanted to understand the ideas and strategies behind coaching. That’s how the journey began,” he explained.
Now an assistant coach at FC Nordsjaelland in Denmark, Essien is dedicated to helping young players succeed. “I do my best to support the young boys coming through so they can achieve something in their careers,” he said.
Coaching has also given him insight into the challenges faced by managers, particularly his former coach, José Mourinho.
“Now, I understand why coaches, like Mourinho, would get so animated on the sidelines,” he noted.
