Mobile Money Transactions Surge 64.7% to Hit GHS 649.2 Billion
The value of mobile money transactions in Ghana soared to GHS 649.2 billion in the first two months of 2025, reflecting a 64.7% year-on-year increase, according to data from the Bank of Ghana. The surge highlights the resilience of the digital payments sector despite recent regulatory changes.
In January 2025, mobile money transactions reached GHS 333 billion, before moderating to GHS 316.2 billion in February. This compares with GHS 394.2 billion recorded in the first two months of 2024.
The expansion comes despite the presence of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy), which was abolished last week by the new administration. Analysts expect the removal of the levy to further accelerate mobile money adoption, reinforcing the growth of the country’s financial technology ecosystem.
The total number of registered mobile money accounts now stands at 74.1 million, up from 66.9 million a year earlier. However, while registered agents are estimated at 896,000, only 411,000 remain actively engaged in facilitating transactions.
Ghana’s mobile money sector has exhibited robust growth, with transaction values in 2024 reaching a record GHS 3.02 trillion, a 57.9% increase from the previous year. The latest figures suggest that, buoyed by shifting regulatory policies and rising adoption, the sector is poised for further expansion in 2025.
