The TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) PAMOJA 2024 delivered yet another exhilarating round of matches, with Morocco and Madagascar clinching their places in the semi-finals. Both teams showcased their resilience and determination, while tournament debutants Kenya and Tanzania exited with pride after commendable campaigns.
Morocco Edges Past Tanzania 1-0
In a thrilling match in Dar es Salaam, Morocco secured their spot in the semi-finals with a narrow 1-0 victory over Tanzania. The Atlas Lions showcased their experience and tactical prowess, drawing first blood in the 65th minute when striker Oussama Lamlaoui pounced on a clever assist from Youssef Belammari. This decisive goal sent Morocco into the semi-finals for the third time in tournament history.
Despite the setback, Tanzania fought valiantly, pressing high and creating several opportunities through Clement Mzize and Feisal Salum. However, Moroccan goalkeeper El Mehdi Al Harrar was in commanding form, denying the hosts any further chances. The home crowd’s hopes were dashed as Morocco’s defense, led by Mohamed Moufid and Mehdi Mchakhchekh, held firm under pressure, ensuring a memorable victory for the two-time champions.
Madagascar Triumphs Over Kenya in Penalty Shoot-Out
In the second match, Kenya’s dream of reaching their first continental semi-final in 38 years ended in heartbreak as Madagascar prevailed in a dramatic penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw at the Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi. The Harambee Stars took an early lead through Alphonce Omija, who scored with a powerful header shortly after halftime. However, Madagascar equalized in the 66th minute when Fenohasina Razafimaro converted a penalty after a handball by Lewis Bandi.
With the match locked at 1-1 after 120 minutes, the contest moved to penalties. Kenya’s initial composure faltered as Alphonce Omija and Mike Kibwage missed their attempts, allowing Madagascar to seize the moment. Toky Rakotondraibe converted the decisive penalty, sending Madagascar through to the semi-finals.
Both teams left the tournament with pride. Tanzania, despite their exit, had an impressive campaign, marking their first time reaching the quarter-finals. Coach Hamad Suleiman’s side demonstrated resilience and determination, finishing their tournament with the best defensive record, conceding only two goals across five matches.
