MTN FA Cup: Hearts of Oak and Medeama Eliminated in Round of 16

In a dramatic day of upsets in the 2024/25 MTN FA Cup, both Accra Hearts of Oak and Medeama SC faced elimination at the hands of lower-tier sides, Golden Kick and PAC Academy, respectively.

Accra Hearts of Oak’s campaign came to a disappointing end after a penalty shootout loss to Division One League side Golden Kick. The match at the University of Ghana Stadium ended goalless after 90 minutes, leading to a tense shootout where Hearts fell 4-3. Despite dominating early chances, including a close miss from Kwabena Boateng, the Phobians struggled to find the net.

They were reduced to ten men in the second half when Theophilus Collins received a second yellow card, complicating their efforts. After a goalless draw, Hearts could not convert their penalties effectively, with Asamoah Boateng and Samuel Amofa missing key attempts.

Medeama SC also suffered a heart-wrenching exit after a 1-1 draw against PAC Academy, followed by a 4-2 defeat in penalties. Medeama took an early lead through Mubarik Yussif’s penalty just four minutes into the match, but PAC quickly equalized. The two teams remained deadlocked through the second half, with neither side able to break the tie. In the penalty shootout, while PAC converted all their attempts, Medeama faltered, missing two crucial penalties that sealed their fate.

While some Premier League sides struggled, Berekum Chelsea made a statement with a commanding 4-1 victory over Division One club Northern City. The former FA Cup winners showed their class, dispatching their lower-tier opponents with ease to book a quarterfinal spot.

Bechem United secured a hard-fought victory at Techiman Liberty and True Democracy beat Nania on penalties after a 1-1 draw and Karela United beat Young Apostles.
