Senyo Hosi Criticizes Electoral Commission Over Delayed Presidential Results Announcement

Economic Policy Analyst, Senyo Hosi, has voiced his displeasure with the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Jean Mensa, for delaying the announcement of the 2024 presidential election results.

Mr Hosi’s critique followed the prompt concession of defeat by the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who acknowledged his loss just 16 hours after polls closed.

Speaking on TV3’s Ghana Decides 2024 program on Monday, December 9, Mr Hosi questioned the rationale behind the delay.

“At this stage, if Bawumia could tell he’s lost within 24 hours, how much more Jean Mensa?” he remarked.

Mr Hosi described the entire process as a symbolic farewell for Jean Mensa, stating, “The whole thing, in all honesty, was a farewell for me, so Jean, thank you very much.”

He further criticized the EC for what he called excessive expenditure on an outdated process of official declaration.

The Electoral Commission officially declared the 2024 Presidential Election results on December 9, 2024, at 6PM, announcing John Dramani Mahama as the president-elect with 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the total valid votes cast.

Ms Jean Mensa’s closing remarks, “It is finished,” marked the culmination of a rigorous electoral season, which included months of campaigning, voting, and national anticipation.

While the announcement is viewed as a historic moment in Ghana’s democratic journey, it has also raised discussions about electoral processes and the efficiency of institutions charged with managing the democratic framework.
