Parliament’s Energy Committee to Hold Emergency Meeting Over Middle East Tensions and Impact on Ghana’s Oil Supply

Collins Adomako-Mensah, Deputy Ranking Member of Parliament’s Energy Committee, has disclosed that the committee is preparing an urgent meeting with key stakeholders in the energy sector to assess the potential effects of rising tensions in the Middle East on Ghana’s oil prices.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, March 2, 2026, Mr. Adomako-Mensah said the session is expected to take place early this week, amid escalating developments involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

“My chairman has informed me that we are likely to convene an emergency meeting with the sector’s main players,” he stated. “We plan to engage officials from the energy industry, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Minister of Energy, possibly by Tuesday or Wednesday.”

The committee is seeking insights from technical experts on how the conflict might impact Ghana’s fuel supply and pricing.

“They are the specialists and should clarify the implications, although we already have an expectation of potential price hikes,” he added.
Mr. Adomako-Mensah said the situation has renewed debates about the country’s domestic refining capabilities, particularly the operations at the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR).

“I’m encouraged that TOR is now operational, even if not at full capacity,” he said. “It is essential that we have thorough policy discussions with our producers. Ghana produces oil, so we must determine how to respond during such crises.”

He called for prompt engagement with local oil producers to explore increasing crude refining within the country to ensure consistent supply.
“Can we urgently meet with them to see if more crude can be refined locally so that supply is secured?” he asked.

The MP added that the planned meeting will involve officials from the Ministry of Energy and other regulatory agencies to brief the committee on the likely economic and energy impacts of the conflict.

“These are policy decisions that must be guided by the ministry,” he emphasized. “We are likely to meet officials and the Ministry of Energy on Wednesday to gain further clarity.”

Given Ghana’s heavy reliance on imported refined petroleum products, any sudden surge in global oil prices could lead to higher fuel costs, increased transportation fares, and overall inflationary pressure on living costs.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah said the committee’s initiative is aimed at enabling policymakers to act early and protect consumers from the worst consequences of potential price shocks.
