Napo, John Kumah, Ursula and Afenyo-Markin risk losing Parliamentary seats – Report

Incumbent Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament for Manhyia South Constituency, Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, risks losing his Parliamentary seat in the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary and Presidential primaries.

Aside the Energy Minister, the Deputy Minister for Finance, John Kumah, has also been tipped to lose his seat in the upcoming NPP primaries.

According to a recent survey undertaken by Ghanaian research firm, Global InfoAnalytics, the two MPs are unlikely to be favoured by voters in the party’s primaries.

For the Energy Minister, 71% of voters in the primaries are unlikely to vote for him as there is a party opposition to his re-election as the MP for Manhyia South Constituency.

The survey reveals that the Minister is in real danger and could struggle to win his primaries.

For Mr John Kumah, only 35% of voters in the primaries are likely to vote for him.

“The MP could have a tough primaries, but we expect him to win the seat of Ejisu Constituency if he wins the primaries,” states the survey.

Regarding the 2024 general elections, two MPs whose seats are at risk include the Communications Minister, Ursula Owusu and the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

According to Global InfoAnalytics, Mrs Ursula Owusu is in trouble as almost half of voters (44%) in her constituency are unlikely to vote for her.

Asserting that, a swing of less than 5% of the voters is required to flip the seat. In such an event, the Minister is unlikely to survive and retain her seat.

The Deputy Majority Leader also appears to be in trouble as voters who deserted both the NPP and NDC to form a new block sits on the fence of his re-election bid, says the survey.

Per the survey, former President John Mahama leads in the Effutu Constituency and if he (Mr Mahama) should carry the Constituency, the Deputy Majority Leader could be heading out of Parliament.
