National Identification Authority Reaffirms 10-Year Lifespan of Ghana Card
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has moved to quash speculation that the validity period of the Ghana Card could be reduced from 10 years, insisting no such amendment has been made or proposed.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the authority described social media claims that the card’s lifespan would be cut as “incorrect” and stressed that the current 10-year renewal period remains in force.
“The Ghana Card remains valid for ten years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed as required by law,” the NIA said.
The clarification follows remarks by the authority’s Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, which the NIA said had been misinterpreted. Mr Deku had suggested that future reviews could explore a shorter update cycle to ensure the card keeps pace with technological changes, similar to the earlier upgrade from a basic barcode to today’s biometric-enabled card.
Officials argued that the 10-year cycle is necessary given the physical card’s lifespan and the likelihood that cardholders’ biometric and personal details change over that period.
“The NIA urges the public to treat the circulating information as incorrect,” the agency said, adding that it remains committed to providing a secure and reliable national identity system.
