Nigerian President Tinubu Rewards Super Falcons with $100,000 Each After WAFCON Triumph

In a grand celebration of their historic achievement, Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has awarded the Super Falcons $100,000 each following their thrilling 3–2 comeback victory over Morocco in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final. This victory marks the Falcons’ record-extending tenth continental title.

At a special reception held at the State House in Abuja, President Tinubu lauded the team’s determination and resilience throughout the tournament. In addition to the cash rewards, the 24 players were honored with the title of Officers of the Order of the Niger (OON), one of Nigeria’s highest civilian honors. Each player will also receive a home in the government-backed Renewed Hope Estate, further underscoring their monumental achievement. The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) added to the celebration by granting ₦10 million to each player and official.

The final against Morocco was a gripping encounter, with the host nation initially taking the lead through Ghizlane Chebbak and Sanaa Mssoudy. However, the Super Falcons rallied back, with Esther Okoronkwo converting a critical penalty before assisting Folashade Ijamilusi for the equalizer. The comeback was completed when Jennifer Echegini curled in a stunning free kick, sealing the victory and igniting celebrations across Nigeria.

Several Nigerian players stood out during the tournament, earning spots in CAF’s Team of the Tournament. Notable mentions include:

– Rasheedat Ajibade: Three-time Woman of the Match and Best Player of the Tournament.
– Esther Okoronkwo: Key player with two goals and four assists.
– Michelle Alozie: Defensive stalwart and semi-final goalscorer against South Africa.
– Chiamaka Nnadozie: Recognized as Best Goalkeeper, achieving four clean sheets.
