Djokovic Advances with Ease as Emotions Erupt at Roland-Garros 2025

Novak Djokovic showcased his dominance on the clay courts of Roland-Garros, breezing past Corentin Moutet in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(1). This victory marked Djokovic’s 20th consecutive appearance in the third round of the French Open, further solidifying his status as a favorite in the tournament.

As the sun shone brightly over the iconic venue, the day unfolded with a mix of thrilling matches and heartfelt farewells. Fifth seed Jack Draper put on a show later in the day, overcoming the spirited Gael Monfils in a tightly contested encounter. Draper clinched the match 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, securing his spot in the third round for the first time. The match was tense, especially as Monfils surged to a 5-2 lead in the fourth set, but Draper’s resilience shone through, setting up an exciting clash with Joao Fonseca on Saturday.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere on Court Simonne-Mathieu turned somber as Nicolas Mahut played his final match at Roland-Garros. In a bittersweet farewell, Mahut and his long-time partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert fell to Italians Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, 7-6(2), 6-2. Following the match, the crowd honored Mahut with an emotional farewell ceremony, celebrating his illustrious career that included two men’s doubles titles at the French Open.

Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic also made headlines, achieving a remarkable upset over Denis Shapovalov. Misolic triumphed 6-3 in the fifth set, earning his first third-round appearance at a major and setting up a daunting challenge against Djokovic.

As the evening progressed, young talent Arthur Fils delivered a stunning performance, battling through injury to defeat Jaume Munar in a gripping five-set thriller, finishing 6-4 in the decider. The French crowd erupted in celebration, reveling in Fils’ dramatic victory.

Day 5 concluded with heightened anticipation for the night match featuring Draper and Monfils with the former progressing to the next round after an electrifying action under the lights of Chatrier.
