NPA grants 3 year waiver to local refineries
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has issued a directive announcing waiver for local oil refineries producing diesel and petrol with sulphur levels not exceeding 1,500 mg/kg.
In a statement on Thursday, the NPA said the interim directive, which took effect Thursday 20 January, 2022 and ends 31 December 2024, is to allow for an ECOWAS directive on Harmonised Specification for Automotive Fuels.
“The interim waiver’s implementation is to ensure that local refineries remain operational, while they introduce measures to meet the sulphur requirements stipulated in the ECOWAS Harmonised Specifications for Automotive Fuels which is 50 mg/kg,” the statement said.
Local refineries have been struggling to meet the permissible sulphur content in petroleum products consumed in the country at 50 mg/kg since July 2017.
This latest move by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is a respite for the local refineries.
