NSMQ 2021: Prempeh College bags Ghs 80,000 after being crowned champions

The grand finale of the 2021 National Science and Maths Quiz came to a befitting end at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology on Friday as Prempeh College were crowned champions for the fifth time.

The final which was contested by Presbyterian Boys Secondary School Legon, Keta SHTS and Prempeh College lived up to expectations as the eventual winner was known in the last round.

With bragging rights and cash prizes up for grabs, the three schools did not show any sign of slowing down on the title until the fourth round when Keta SHTS was ruled out on winning the competition.

As champions for 2021, Prempeh College bagged the overall prize money given to all schools by the Ghana Education Service, a whooping GH¢ 80,000, with GH¢ 40,000 to be given to the school, GH¢ 20,000 given to the teachers and GH¢ 20,000 to the contestants as well.

In addition to the top prize money, Prempeh College also won the ‘Jama’ prize as the best school in the ‘Jama’ competition.

The first runner-up Presbyterian Boys Secondary School also took home GH¢64,000 with GHS17,000 to the team of students, GH₵17,000 to the teachers and GH₵ 30,000 to the school as a whole.

KETASCO received GH₵50,000 as Bronze medallists, with GH₵20,000 to the school, GH₵15,000 to the students, and GH₵15,000 to the teachers.

Prempeh College won with 53 points as against 49 points by the Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School, Legon (PRESEC) as Keta Senior High and Technical School (KETASCO) came third with 30 points.

The PRESECANS, were hoping to win the trophy for the seventh time in line with their slogan, ‘We are seven a living God’, but it was a host and win for the Prempeh boys, commonly referred to as ‘Amanfoo’ who from the beginning of the competition said they were going to paint the city green by winning the trophy and presenting it to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

As expected, it was a two-horse race between Prempeh College and PRESEC who were the defending champions as the first time finalists, KETASCO could not soar.

The ‘God of 1ders’ from the Oti and Volta Zone made history as first-timers from the Volta and Oti Zone to reach the final but could not make further history as to be the first to win it.

Winning the 2021 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), brings ‘Amanfuo’s’ championship tally to five, one short of PRESEC, Legon who are record holders at six.
