- 2026 FIFA World Cup: Ghana Begin Quest for Glory Against Panama
Ghana will kick off their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign on Wednesday night when they face Panama in a pivotal Group L encounter at Toronto Stadium, with the Black Stars determined to make a winning return to football’s biggest stage.
Making their fifth World Cup appearance, Ghana arrive in Canada carrying the hopes of a nation eager to see the four-time African champions erase the disappointment of recent World Cup campaigns. After suffering group-stage exits in both Brazil 2014 and Qatar 2022, the Black Stars are targeting a strong start in a group that also includes England and Croatia.
The Black Stars earned their place at the expanded 48-team tournament with an impressive qualifying campaign, finishing top of their CAF qualification group. However, their preparations for the tournament have been far from ideal, with a difficult run of results in international friendlies and the high-profile absence of midfielder Thomas Partey, who was denied entry into Canada ahead of the opening match.
Despite those setbacks, head coach,Carlos Queiroz, remains confident the Black Stars can rise to the occasion. “We are ready to win matches at this World Cup,” Queiroz said ahead of the game. “Every match is important and every match is a must-win. Panama are a well-organized team, but we have prepared solutions to deal with their strengths and expose their weaknesses.”
The Black Stars have undergone significant changes since securing qualification. Former coach Otto Addo departed after a series of disappointing performances, paving the way for experienced Portuguese tactician Queiroz to take charge.
The veteran manager, who previously led several national teams including Portugal and Iran, is now overseeing his second consecutive World Cup finals campaign after managing Iran at Qatar 2022.
Ghana enter the tournament on the back of a worrying seven-match winless streak, having suffered defeats against Austria, Germany and Mexico in recent months. Nevertheless, World Cups have often brought out the best in the Black Stars, whose memorable runs in 2006 and 2010 established them as one of Africa’s most respected football nations.
Captain Jordan Ayew is expected to spearhead Ghana’s attack after scoring seven goals during qualification. He would be supported by exciting attacking talents including Antoine Semenyo, Ernest Nuamah and Fatawu Issahaku as the Black Stars seek to secure three valuable points.
One of the biggest talking points ahead of the match remains the absence of Thomas Partey. The experienced midfielder has been forced to remain at Ghana’s training base in Boston after being denied a visa to enter Canada. His absence leaves a major gap in Ghana’s midfield, placing greater responsibility on players such as Lawrence Agyekum, Caleb Yirenkyi and Kwasi Sibo to control proceedings against a disciplined Panamanian side.
However, Ghana still possess considerable quality across the pitch, with defenders Gideon Mensah, Razak Simpson and Jerome Opoku expected to play key roles in defence.
Standing in Ghana’s way are a Panama side determined to make history in only their second World Cup appearance. Los Canaleros made their tournament debut at Russia 2018 but exited after losing all three group matches. Eight years later, they arrive as a much-improved outfit and one of the strongest teams in Central America.
Panama impressed throughout CONCACAF qualifying, finishing top of their group and remaining unbeaten during the final phase of qualification. Under coach Thomas Christiansen, the team has developed into a highly competitive unit capable of troubling more established football nations.
“The group is like a beautiful family,” Head coach Christiansen said. “It is not just about being part of the tournament; it is about making history. We want to create joy for our entire country.”
Panama’s recent performances suggest they are capable of causing problems. Although they suffered a heavy defeat to Brazil in a pre-World Cup friendly, they produced encouraging spells against the South American giants and finished runners-up in the 2025 CONCACAF Nations League.
Veteran midfielder Anibal Godoy is expected to earn his 156th international cap, while forward José Fajardo and winger Édgar Bárcenas will be among Panama’s key attacking threats.
There is also optimism surrounding influential midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla, who recently returned to training after injury and could feature during the match.
With England and Croatia widely regarded as the favourites to progress from Group L, the clash between Ghana and Panama has taken on added importance.
Victory for either side would significantly boost their chances of reaching the knockout stages, while defeat could leave them facing an uphill task against two of Europe’s strongest teams.
For Ghana especially, a positive result is viewed as essential before tougher fixtures against England and Croatia. The Black Stars will be eager to demonstrate that they can once again compete with the world’s best and challenge for a place in the last 32.
