NUGS Hold Vigil Walk For Former Leaders Dr Omane Boamah and Dr Ibrahim Murtala Ahead of State Funeral

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has led a vigil walk in honour of former union president Dr Edward Omane Boamah and former student politician Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, both of whom died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.

The procession, from the University of Ghana to the University of Professional Studies, Accra, drew past and present NUGS leaders, student activists and members of the public. The two men had gone on to serve as Defence Minister and Environment Minister respectively.

They were among eight people killed when an Air Force helicopter went down in a forested area of Sikaman in the Adansi Akrofrom District, Ashanti Region, en route to Obuasi for the launch of the government’s Cooperative Mining Initiative.
