Dr. Ishmael Yamson calls for bold expenditure cuts in Mid-Year Budget Review

Dr. Ishmael Yamson calls for bold expenditure cuts in Mid-Year Budget Review

Renowned economist, Dr. Ishmael Yamson, has issued a stern challenge to the Ghanaian government, urging them to exhibit unwavering commitment to fiscal consolidation through substantial expenditure cuts in the upcoming Mid-Year Budget Review. Dr. Yamson contends that the ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) program is perilously at risk of faltering unless proactive measures are taken to curb the nation’s ballooning expenditure.

In a recent appearance on PM Express Business Edition, Dr. Yamson cogently argued against resorting to further tax hikes as a means of bolstering economic recovery. He posited that such a path could inflict grievous harm on an already beleaguered private sector, jeopardizing the broader prospects of the nation’s economic rejuvenation.

Drawing from his extensive expertise, the seasoned economist advocated for a paradigm shift, urging the government to refocus its efforts on fostering public-private partnership agreements that would empower the private sector to take the reins in driving the country’s economic resurgence and overall development.

“The IMF program should merely serve as a supportive pillar to the government’s initiatives,” contended Dr. Yamson sagely. His counsel stressed that Ghana’s longstanding fiscal challenge lay in persistently spending beyond its revenue-generating capacity. Thus, he called upon the government to lay bare its commitment to prudent financial management by articulating concrete and verifiable measures aimed at slashing expenditure.

Candidly, Dr. Yamson underscored the urgency of the matter, cautioning that should the government fail to recalibrate its spending patterns, the IMF program risked becoming an exercise in futility. With remarkable eloquence, he pointed out that an injection of billions without rectifying the underlying fiscal imbalance would merely serve to perpetuate the burden of debt and interest payments on the state’s coffers.

In his unyielding stance, the esteemed economist extolled the virtues of fiscal responsibility, demanding a transparent and auditable path towards curbing excessive spending. He aptly emphasized that the nation’s progress hinged on a concerted effort by the government to walk the tightrope of fiscal prudence, thereby paving the way for sustainable economic growth and stability.
