Organised Labour Declares Indefinite Strike Over SSNIT Hotel Stake Sale
Organised Labour has declared an indefinite strike action following the National Pensions Regulatory Authority’s (NPRA) approval of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust’s (SSNIT) controversial plan to offload a 60% stake in four hotels to Bryan Acheampong’s Rock City Hotel.
Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), criticized the NPRA for allowing SSNIT to proceed with the deal without further engagement, after initially ordering a halt.
The TUC has therefore directed its members to embark on an industrial strike starting Monday, July 15, until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the sale process.
“From Monday 15 of July 2024, all workers in Ghana must not go to work until SSNIT publicly announces the termination of the process for the sale of its shares in the hotels,” Dr. Baah stated.
The union argued that the sale was not in the best interest of Ghanaian workers.
Minister for Employment, Labour Relations and Pensions, Ignatius Baffour Awuah, on Thursday, July 10, told Parliament that the NPRA had cleared SSNIT to proceed with the sale of its stake in the four hotels to Rock City Hotel owned by the Minister for Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
He explained that the NPRA initially requested all sale details for perusal before issuing the clearance.
“So, as a Minister, I can tell you with authority that NPRA has since indicated that they have seen the processes and they think that SSNIT can go ahead,” he stated.
