Asante Kotoko Won’t Play Until GFA Addresses Safety Concerns – IMC Chairman Tells GFA

Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee (IMC) Chairman, Nana Apinkra, has delivered a stern message to the Ghana Football Association (GFA): the club will not resume football activities until their proposals are fully addressed. This declaration follows a meeting in Kumasi, the first since the tragic murder of club member Nana Pooley.

Nana Apinkra emphasized the urgency of reforms needed before Kotoko returns to the pitch. The club had previously suspended all football-related activities after the incident in Nsoatre and, alongside rivals Hearts of Oak, submitted several recommendations to the GFA. These include the establishment of an Autonomous League Management, enhanced security measures, guaranteed representation on the GFA Executive Council, and a fair share of television rights.

“As for the GFA, we already know you take us for granted, but from now on, whether you like it or not, you will respect us,” Apinkra asserted. “Kotoko and Hearts cannot be ignored. All we are asking for are better security measures.”

He made it clear that Kotoko is not opposed to playing football but insists they will only return when their concerns are adequately addressed. “Even today, if you respond to our proposals, we will play. But until then, count us out because we cannot sit back and watch another life lost. We will go to every length necessary to get to the bottom of this matter,” he stated passionately.

In response to the ongoing situation, the GFA has engaged in discussions with representatives from all 18 Premier League clubs to assess safety concerns, agreeing on several reforms aimed at improving security before the league resumes.
